Looking Ahead to the Next 55 Years – Nippon Taiiku Shisetsu ( NTS )
Since its founding in 1971, Nippon Taiiku Shisetsu Co., Ltd. has expanded its business from the construction of sports facilities to management and operation, and the development of products and services. And in 2026, thanks to your support, Nippon Taiiku Shisetsu celebrated its 55th anniversary.
Founded by members of the team that built a stadium for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics
Our company was established by members who had been involved in the construction of the former National Kasumigaoka Stadium for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, with the aim of delivering authentic, high-quality sports grounds in Japan. At the time of our founding as a sports facility construction company, what sustained us was a strong sense of mission—to build world-class grounds that could compete globally—and a team of trusted colleagues. Although our founding members were veteran engineers and construction professionals, we were newcomers as a corporate entity and faced many challenges in gaining recognition in public works projects during our early years. Even under such circumstances, we steadily pursued our founding goals, including the domestic production of urethane track surfacing materials.
A Turning Point: Development of a High-Performance Track Surface
A major turning point came in 1990 when we were awarded the contract for the track renovation at the former National Kasumigaoka Stadium. The roller-embossed urethane track surfacing material developed by Nippon Taiiku Shisetsu was adopted for the project and subsequently introduced to stadiums nationwide.
Our proprietary track surface has been highly praised for its excellent shock absorption, reducing physical strain—particularly for long-distance runners—and for its superior grip performance for wheelchair athletes.
Incorporating the perspectives of athletes and users into facility development has become one of our core strengths. We believe that this user-centered approach ultimately aligns with the objectives of facility owners and operators.
Product Development Based on Experience
Through our work on athletics stadiums, we bridged the gap between the needs of users who wished to hold throwing events with the concers of facility managers about turf damage. This led to the development of Sports Turf Λ (Lambda)—the world’s first artificial turf system that allows throwing events.
In 2018, this system was approved for use in Japan Association of Athletics Federations-certified stadiums ( then Class 1-3 only ), and it is now available for installation in all certified stadiums. Facilities that have adopted Sports Turf Λ have hosted specialized throwing competitions while also supporting multi-purpose use such as soccer, rugby, and physical education classes.
During the 2019 Rugby World Cup, hybrid turf systems combining the strengths of natural and artificial grass drew attention as innovative, damage-resistant solutions. Nippon Taiiku Shisetsu’s hybrid turf, Extra Grass, refined through the expertise accumulated via our Sports Turf projects and adapted to Japan’s environmental conditions, was installed at Oita Stadium (formerly Showa Denko Dome Oita), one of the tournament venues.
The Challenge of Our 55th Anniversary
Since its founding, Nippon Taiiku Shisetsu has built a strong track record nationwide as a specialist company in sports facility construction, and in May 2026, it celebrated its 55th anniversary. Moving forward, Nippon Taiiku Shisetsu will continue its relentless pursuit of excellence in order to contribute to the progress and development of a prosperous society through the provision of sports and recreation facilities.
